Win a Free Audio Book!
In 2004, an essay I wrote was one of 50 published in a book called MoveOn's 50 Ways To Love Your Country: How To Find Your Political Voice And Become A Catalyst For Change. It's a pretty handy little book, with lots of fun ideas for getting involved no matter where you fall on the political spectrum. This has been my closest brush with literary fame, so I like to bring it up as often as possible. I did so just today.
"Kelly, how do you type that e with an accent?"
"Gosh, that reminds me of that time I was typing an essay of mine, which was 1 of 50 selected from thousands to be published in a bestselling book. And did I ever tell you about how Al Gore—you know, the Nobel Peace Prize winner—also wrote a piece for that book?"
A couple months after the book came out, the publisher called to ask if I'd record my essay for the audio version. I don't particularly like my voice, but do you think I'd pass up an opportunity to wallow even deeper in my faux fame?
As payment for my oh-so-gifted voice work, the publisher sent me some of the audio books. Lots of them. They are currently sitting in a box in my home office. FOUR years later.
I'm sick of looking at that damn box. And they're certainly not doing any good for the world by sitting in my office not getting listened to by any living soul. So last week I was giving that box the hairy eyeball, and I said to myself, "Self, you should set those audio books free. And it will give you more opportunities to refer to your literary stardom, and that is always A Good Thing."

Free stuff? Count me in. And you know I voted, but if you need proof, I can show you the tracking number. Bet my ballot traveled farthest!
I'm voting soon. I swear.
Do I get bonus points for badgering my mom into registering? She moved here last year but hadn't registered yet because she didn't want to get called for jury duty. I told her that if she didn't vote, she didn't get to talk about politics.
@Tim, ah if only the rest of us had tracking numbers for our ballots!
@Vick, what a good daughter you are! :) I always tell people I've been registered to vote for 12 years, and I've only been called to jury duty once, and the case ended up getting settled before I ever had to drive to the courthouse. I actually *want* to be in a jury, though, so I wish you could trade with someone who *didn't* want to go when they're called.
I don't need an audio book. I can never get through a chapter without falling asleep. However, I just wanted to comment that (A) I already voted, and (B) that's pretty awesome that you are in an audio book. That definitely qualifies as something you can check off of your bucket list.
cooollll! I am in- thanks- please enter me thankyou..mrs.mommyyatgmail.com
I'm voting - but I'm voting under duress. I don't like my options! So I'm gonna pout the whole time. So there!
I am voting in room H-30 at Dos Pueblos High School....I went there so I know exactly where it is. We vote by bubbling in circles with a pen. Thanks!
Hello! Not only am I voting (at a large white building next door, *after* the swarms of energetic midgets it attempts to pacify & educate have evacuated & gone home to their holding cells) we are supporting you with a glamorous post on our blog today. I will supplement my worthiness by saying I always vote, not just for major elections, but local annual elections, too; i read the big book of tricky propositions & all those damn supplements & they're circular pro & con arguments; I am the coolest friend ever because I read your essay in 2004; I will be trying to figure out how to vote twice, if not 10 times more (legally); I use semi-colons in blog comments; and I have the longest blog comment!
And don't ask me about those damn voting machines. They keep changing their minds, so I just show up, fill out the latest form, put it in the latest box or machine & cross my fingers that, though, it looks like a paper shredder, they'll actually count it.
Yes I will be voting. I believe that every person should vote. We owe that to the people that fought so hard to give us that right.
We vote at the local elementary school.
